Building a Travel Insurance Policy to Fit Your Needs

Travel insurance policies come in many different forms. From basic, inexpensive plans with one or two points of coverage to all inclusive policies, one is able to find a plan specifically suited to their individual travel needs. When selecting a plan to suit your needs, it is important to consider a few different factors so that you are more than adequately covered when embarking on your trip.

Will the Policy Truly Cover Your Expenses?

The first factor you should consider when choosing a travel insurance plan is whether the coverage amounts offered by the insurer will be sufficient to cover your potential expenses or losses. For example, if the luggage coverage will only cover $200 worth of luggage and your bags cost over $1,000, then the travel insurance policy may not be right for you. In other words, you want to be certain that the policy you buy will cover all if not more of what you have with you on the trip. This also applies to other benefits offered, such as cancellation expenses and medical expenses. If the cover is not sufficient, it may be worth looking elsewhere for a plan or considering other plans offered by that insurance company.

What Coverage Is Necessary and What Can Be Eliminated?

In addition to considering the coverage amounts, you should also determine what cover and benefits you really need to have and what can be eliminated from the policy. For example, if you have medical coverage through your health insurance plan, you ultimately will not need extra coverage included with your travel plan. Try skipping this coverage on the travel policy and save some money on the overall premium of such a policy. Note that this example is used only to illustrate the point – many personal health insurance plans will not cover international travel. In addition, if you have to pay a higher premium for luggage protection and you feel such coverage is unnecessary, this too can be kept out of the policy and perhaps save money on the overall premium.

Can a Representative Be Reached At All Times?

Another important concept to consider when reviewing travel insurance plans is whether a company representative can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is a beneficial factor to look into as incidents may happen at any time during the day and if you cannot get a hold of your insurance provider to remedy the situation then the policy is not as effective as it should be. Therefore, ask the company representative how the policy coverage can be enacted when needed and if someone can be reached any time they are needed to be consulted.
